If you have lived in Dallas for one summer, you know what bare concrete feels like under bare feet in August: scorching. A south-facing concrete pool deck in direct sun can hit 140-150°F surface temperature. Walkable in shoes. Not walkable in skin.
Standard epoxy coatings make this worse. They are dark-colored by default, they absorb solar radiation efficiently, and they retain heat. A standard epoxy pool deck can be 5-10°F hotter than the bare concrete underneath.
Heat-reflective topcoats are the answer. They keep epoxy pool decks 20-30°F cooler than bare concrete — the difference between “run for the pool” and “walk to the pool barefoot.”
How heat-reflective topcoats work
The core technology is solar reflectance index (SRI). A heat-reflective topcoat formulation includes:
- High-reflectance pigments. Specifically formulated to reflect solar radiation across the visible and near-infrared spectrum. Standard pigments only reflect visible light; heat-reflective pigments also reflect the IR wavelengths that heat the surface.
- Light-color base. Heat-reflective formulations work best in lighter colors (whites, sand, light gray, light tan). Dark colors absorb regardless of pigment chemistry — a black heat-reflective topcoat is still a black surface that gets hot.
- Cool roof technology adapted from commercial roofing. The same reflective pigments used in cool roofs (which can lower a building's cooling load 10-20%) get formulated into floor topcoats.
The result: surface temperatures 20-30°F lower than bare concrete in direct sun. Tested with infrared thermometer, repeatable across summer afternoons.
What a heat-reflective pool deck system looks like
A typical Sherwood's pool deck install:
- Diamond grind the existing concrete to a CSP-2 profile. Same as any other system.
- Crack chase + crack-isolation membrane where the slab needs it. Pool decks see thermal cycling and slab movement; isolation membrane prevents crack telegraphing.
- Primer + base coat in the chosen base color. Most pool decks are sand, light tan, or light gray for the heat-reflective math.
- Decorative broadcast — we add a slip-safe granular broadcast for traction with wet feet. Coarser blend than indoor systems.
- Heat-reflective urethane topcoat. Two coats. UV-stable, chlorine-resistant, hot-water tolerant.
Total install: 4-5 days including cure windows. Walkable after 24 hours. Pool-ready after 5-7 days.
What heat-reflective topcoats cost
A heat-reflective urethane topcoat is roughly $1-2/sq ft more than a standard topcoat. For a 400 sq ft pool deck, that is $400-800 added to the install. We default to specifying it for any sun-exposed deck — the cost is small relative to the comfort upside.
For shaded decks (covered patios, wrap-around shaded pool decks), we ask first. Sometimes the heat-reflective spec is unnecessary because the deck is rarely in direct sun. Sometimes it is overkill for the budget. We have the conversation; we do not auto-upcharge.
What heat-reflective topcoats do not solve
Two things to be honest about:
They do not work in dark colors.
If you want a deep charcoal pool deck because it pairs with your house exterior, you cannot have heat-reflective performance. The pigment chemistry needs the light color to work. Dark heat-reflective topcoats exist; they just do not deliver the temperature reduction.
The choice: light color (cool deck) or dark color (visually striking but hot). We tell you the trade-off honestly.
They wear over time.
The reflective pigments are in the topcoat, not throughout the system. As the topcoat wears (5-8 years for a residential deck), the reflectance drops. Recoat brings it back. Plan for a topcoat refresh at year 5-7 to maintain cool-deck performance.
Slip safety, separately
One thing that gets confused: heat-reflective and slip-safe are different specs. You can have a hot floor that is slip-safe, or a cool floor that is slippery, depending on what is in the topcoat.
For pool decks we always include slip-safe broadcast in addition to heat-reflective formulation. Both are required for a deck that gets wet feet, sunscreen, and pool chemicals on the surface.
